The loss of the 1890 United States Federal Census is a major blow to genealogical study of the late 19th Century. While the Veterans Schedules, and a few fragments exist, decent substitutes for the Census data are rare. Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, however, has one.

While it does not contain the complete information of the original U.S. Census records (for example, only omitting occupations for women), it does provide a rare semi-substitute for the missing information.

There are a couple of ways to access this information, published as a directory in 1891, called “A Directory of the Eleventh Census of the Population of Schuylkill County, Giving the Names and Ages of Males and Females.” Options include:
